A cylinder bored a few millimetres off centre, or a strike plate morticed slightly proud, produces a lock that works today and binds within months. Correct installation means measuring the backset properly, boring square, setting the strike so the latch enters cleanly with the door at rest, and checking operation with the door both open and closed. It is undramatic work, and it is the difference between hardware that lasts and hardware that irritates you daily.

The sensible sequence is to decide what the door needs to do, then choose hardware, then cut. A door used forty times a day needs a heavier mechanism than a linen cupboard. A door in a wet, sun-exposed position needs a finish that will survive it. An internal door that must be lockable but never lock a child in needs a specific type of privacy set.
