Tell us what the door is doing
The most useful thing you can do on the phone is describe the behaviour rather than the diagnosis. Does the key turn but the door stay shut? Does the handle move freely without moving the latch? Is the key visibly bent, or snapped with part of it still in the cylinder? Those details tell us which tools and replacement parts are worth bringing, which usually means one visit rather than two.
- Where you are, and whether you have safe access to wait nearby
- Whether it is a home, a business premises or a vehicle
- What the key and handle are doing when you try them
- Whether anyone else holds a working key that could be collected
